I think you underestimate the compassion of God and the rest of the dead people somehow still living and in heaven. Assuming that God exists, He should be compassionate to those who rejected Him because He made the universe look like it didn't need Him, and except for a fairly small percentage of exceptions, those who believed in Him were the more gullible, less scientifically literate (children and child-like adults).

Can parents blame children for foolishily believing in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy when the parents play that role? Likewise, can God blame the scientifically-literate for rejecting Him when He made the universe just so that conclusion was the most reasonable? I don't think so.

Based on arguments like this, I concluded that atheists would be no worse off than theists in the afterlife, if there were one. If religious practice could not guarantee a superior afterlife, what good was it? To me it became more reasonable to assume God and an afterlife were nonexistent than that they existed, but those obedient to God didn't do any better on Earth or even after they die than the disobedient.
