Most people need some form of theism. I agree, that is why most people would lable themselves under one form of theism or another. I also think they don't carefully examine their theism because they do not want to. It is easier to hold beliefs, live life, and not worry about death.

That being said, I think this is the case for most subjects. It is just an extreme case, perhaps the most extreme. Look at so many other issues, they are not thought about critically by most people. This has the added incentive of adding psychological peace for many people, and if it didn't they still probably would not think about it critically.
