Atheism isn't a belief, it's a lack of belief. It's hardly accepted without question, in fact it's questions that lead a person to atheism in the first place.

Re: your "if the athiests turn out to be wrong," I actually used to cling to religion on this reasoning, figuring if I was right, then I live forever, and if I was wrong, it didn't make any difference what I believed in life anyway. Until I realized that that isn't true belief, it's belief out of fear. Now I'm a borderline atheist and actually quite happy. Fear is exactly how most believers are kept in line: "If I don't do what I'm told, God will punish me." I narrowly averted falling into that pit.
