The book Cosmos, by Carl Sagan, covered this in his book I think and definately in his show in the late '70s or early '80s.

I remember quite well how the green goo grew out of suspected elements of the early Earth.

One wonders how well they sterilized that thing before trying the experiment, but I am sure it has been repeated many times in better controled environments. Can anybody verify this? If so, please provide actual links, not just your testimony.
