That sounded well thought out. I think you're right that we have a strange attitude toward death. But I don't know if religion is necessarily just an escape from the prospect of death, although I guess it also serves that purpose. If you aren't religious, then so be it, but since there isn't much empirical proof for any religion, or for atheism, I would say that you've just made your guess at whether God exists. Theists have made a different guess. The fact that religion helps us deal with death doesn't mean we made it up -- that could be true, but it isn't necessarily.
