Say, animals eat and multiply. We are animals too, so our prime purpose is to eat and to multiply.

Because we are given a couple mm of brains, it keeps constantly asksing itself: is this all? shouldn't there be something beyong the self -reproduction? And because we want to egoustically appear in our eyes apart from other mammals, it (brain)is in constant search for various excuses to claim our "specialcy". Thus, it feels that we SHALL have higher than mammals "goal" (or purpose, mission, sense, etc) of our life.

So, if you really want to have mission, or purpose, you may consider exersizing a gray matter as something other mammals may have problem with (well, some of them) - abstract thinking (insteadd of thinking tangibly, intuitevely or emotionally). So, developing and exersizing intellectual activities may be considered as a reasonably noble goal of human life if you can't live with the fact that we are animals or bunch of chemical reactions.
