I'm a high school student right now, and the only reason I hate some classes isn't because they're too hard, but because I don't like the teacher. No offense. :) But currently I'm doing the hardest math I've ever done before, and enjoying it just because the teacher is personable and humorous. (i.e. "You're dumb, fat and ugly. Do your homework or I'll sit on you.") That's a real quote, I swear. So the point is, ya gotta want to do it. Maybe don't throw the tough stuff at them right away, but don't dumb down either. I always hated it when teachers assume that education came from taking a ramrod and forcing information down students' throats. It's a collaberative process. Now, I don't know you, and I may have the situation wrong, but from what I see, this is my assertation.
