As I recall from high school biology class, all animals process information subconsciousely, and because humans are no different they process most of information exactly the same way. And there are several levels of processing - basic but fast processing of vital priopity (for survival)information is called instinktive routing, less basic but slower - intuition routing, etc. Some information in human brain is routed to certain groups of cortex cells, activity of which we call consciouseness.

Because I did not study biology beyond high school, I am not competent to discuss beyond very basics of brain functioning.

I think if you consult biology textbooks or biology encyclopedias or ask specialists (like neurophysiologists, etc.) they will explain which group of cells is responsible for what kind of processing, as well as what "feeling" do we label activity of that group by.
