Anything the ancients believed that has not been verified or has been refuted by science should NOT be accepted

Shouldn't we rely on modern philosophical/sociological reasons for behaving a certain way rather than outdated religious reasons?

Basically, I agree with you. But please tell of any philosophy or sociology that has been verified by science. That's why all the modern philosophers are really linguists. Linguistics is verifiable. But the rest of philosophy is speculation. Same with sociology. That was the conclusion of norman whitehead. If you believe in Godel's work, you might extend this conclusion to mathematics.

My opinion is that we should rely on history even more than science. History is the laboratory of mankinds experiments. It says more about what is right and wrong than anything science says. Same for religion. History provides more information on the consequences of human behavior than either science or religion. The role of religion is relegated to deciding what consequences are desirable. But I agree that such decisions can be made without religion. The Constitution is an example.

What's left for religion. The commandment of Christ to pray in a closet. What's left is for each individual to decide on an afterlife, pro or con, even though science cannot verify it; and then to conduct one's private life in the optimal way to obtain the desired consequences. Saying that I cannot do anything that science does not verify puts an impossible constrain on my freedom of thought and action.
