You are exactly right - as we all know that SR (special relativity) works just fine and therefore is far not worthless.

The fact that Einstein never received Nobel for neither SR nor GR but one in 1921 for explaining photoeffect in 1905 (in essence discovering a photon in 1887-89 experiments) tells that the Nobel commetee does not always award most important dicoveries (nor it always awards those who first made them).
