I still think any history (including European colonialism) that depends upon the existence of Christianity could have occurred without the actual reality of Jesus Christ, only belief in his existence.

In Mormonism, there are sons of God and there is the Son of God. To them we are all spirit children of God and physical children of our parents (except Adam and Eve who didn't have physical parents). Jesus Christ, however, was the physical son of a sexual union between Heavenly Father and Mary.

The "son of God" idea is not unique to the Jews or Christians. Hercules and other Greek Gods were such. Pharoah was the son of God. Evidently, Christians wanted their Son of God to be more believable than others of their time period so they invented a life-history for him.
