Dark energy is the invention of astronomers from Harvard, Australia, and a third group that I forget. They infer it from measurements of distant supernovae. In General Relativity, dark energy is equivalent to the Cosmological Constant that Einstein was so embarrassed about. Turns out he was right, just got the sign on the term wrong.

The hope is that dark energy is not due to the Vacuum Energy, for if it were, the universe would expand away into nothingness in a few billion years, as the vacuum energy increases as the cube of the size of the universe.
