Dark energy is the invention of astronomers from Harvard, Australia, and a third group that I forget. They infer it from measurements of distant supernovae. In General Relativity, dark energy is equivalent to the Cosmological Constant that Einstein was so embarrassed about. Turns out he was right, just got the sign on the term wrong.
