that's why it's also said that when you do good, do it in secret. sure, it's natural to help your next door neighbor cuz they might in turn help you/choose not to scratch your car again.

but to what gain is there, 'naturally', then, to spend good money driving to some dying person's house where the two of you sit alone, and the person hardly even knows who you are by this point, and it's not like they have family or friends who are going to see this and remember and , again, do a kind turn.

there seems to me to be a difference between those 'possibly non-altruistic' actions and those that are done for the sake of compassion or that they need to be done, like helping someone you don't even like and hope not to see again and know won't harm you.
