John:

How do I know that God doesn't want us to discard religious superstition in favor of scientific materialism or humanism? Again, how could I possibly claim to know the mind of God? Moreover, no matter how much one may want to inquire into the mind of God, they cannot ignore the fact that they are inevitably affected by the assumptions and beliefs of the age.

Because "materialism" and "humanism" are viewed today as cultural issues, and because their social importance is generally supposed to result from the moral traditions surrounding them, it would be impossible to present a persuasive argument for the essentially social significance of these things, weather God approves of them or not.
