Studying science is much harder, but and JUST 'reading' Gospel is 'easy'. KNOWING (as a believer) that there are words in there which ought be applied well and finding ways to do so can be a challenge, however. When one really wants to READ read, SERIOUSLY, it's not just a passing skim or fancy. Like studying science, it takes a passion and commitment and desire to want to know more. Maybe some folks just don't have the confidence that if they TRY to study science they might just understand it. It's a matter of choices that lead to making the best of the resources one has (mind, time, obligations, inclinations, second-nature talents, opportunities, etc.).

Mind you, I only speak for myself. The world confounds me most of the time, let me say that now. I don't have answers for everything, nor do I claim to. I'm no better or worse than anyone else.
