what's being measured is the RESULT of those emotions, and not the CAUSE of them

Okay, but the results are just human actions. Maybe love does dominate over other emotions and cause us to do illogical, silly, wonderful things, but it's still an emotion. I think we're saying the same thing here, just coming at it from different angles.
