Well, I may be wrong about this, as I lack schooling too. However as far as I can tell, what we call consciousness is just a side effect of our biology. All of our homeostatic functions and urges (i.e. you're cold so get warm) are just actions and reactions in the computer of the brain. Emotions, too, hate, love, are just chemical processes. Note: I don't mean to say that doesn't make them real or important. Since the argument applies to us humans, and our emotions are very real to us, they can be described as "real" since we have no other frame of reference. The thing is, though, love CAN be explained tangibly. If we're talking about sexual love, it's just something that keeps the guy around long enough to raise the kids :) If it's love between parents and children, it promotes the care and feeding of them. Between friends, it's collaberative survival in case one is in need. See what I'm shooting for? Love is certainly a strong and wonderful thing, but it's by no means intangible and all-powerful.
