Yes. You cannot keep that kind of stuff a secret in the US. It would certainly be leaked. Most likely by politicians who want publicity.

When I was working for the govt and knew the secrets, it was the politicians and program directors who leaked the secrets over and over again in magazines like Aviation Week. The Program Directors would want more money so half the time the leaks were lies that enhanced the programs.

So if someone ever stands to gain money from saying the a asteroid will impact this earth, it will be said. Book writers are a relatively harmless example.
