This is totally wrong. Sailors had made voyages long before Columbus with assumptions that the earth was round. Flat earth beliefs were only held by some very backward individuals. Even the Egyptians knew the earth was round.

There certainly was some concerns about what they may find out "there", but there wasn't much fear about "dropping off the end".
