In fairness, the Arabs were the first in the west to use zero or position-magnitude algorithm. Neither the Greeks nor the Romans had a clue.

The position rule was not discovered. It was invented and it is unnecessary for mathematics. For example, computers do not use it. It's just rather convenient for human hand calculations, which are on the endangered list, anyway.
