a) Ethiopians would fall under the category of the NOT fasting by choice I mentioned, most likely.

b) Brian (equation) may be correct, how DO we know they're not enlightened? they don't go around trying to devise bombs and stuff to destroy everybody, do they? or claw at each other to get the last cordless drill on sale! :)

fasting is good, if chosen, and if it doesn't exacerbate a medical condition where one fasting would be placing themselves in danger.
