Its the same thing that people don't understand when a race car is ripped to shreads and the driver walks away from the accident.

Its called the conservation of energy. When the accident occured, the mother had alot of energy in her because of the speed the truck was moving. So when the truck jackknifed, she now had more energy than the truck and flew out the windshield. Her body suffered because of the absorption of the energy she had on her way to zero velocity. In fact, because her body took most of the energy from the crash, the baby suffered much less of the impact in the accident. This is why when a race car flies into pieces, the driver walks away. The pieces absorbed the energy, the driver absorbed much less. Back in the 50's, the race cars didn't absorb anything and many many more drivers were killed in accidents. I can assure you if the mother had survived, the baby would have died.

Some luck was involved, but it was all based in scientific principles. Now who is to say that this would have been a nice act of god in the first place anyways. Rip the mother into two, thanks god.
