Perhaps in our western culture chanting/singing enjoys a place in childhood rhymes sometimes but fades away as we age as we turn from 'immaturity';or at sunday church (sometimes only then in durge-like tunes that are like 'i'll sing but i wont do it happily lest it seem i'm ignorant of god's might' or something); yet we seem to remain fascinated with cultures where singing continues to the deathbed. Perhaps the silence dates back (age old or contemporary) to the survival of the silent - if you're not heard, you won't be attacked; but then that can carry over if we don't heal from previous oppression and get in the habit of singing for singing's sake. spontaneous utterings/song are the ultimate sign of emotional victory, i believe, because it's the biggest slap in the face to our adversaries to hear us singing - ANYthing.

shouldn't we then sing whenever we can and cry only when we absolutely must? rather than crying inside a lot and singing only when we must? even the birds and animals in nature know that.

:)
