There was less than one billion in my life time- not all that long ago. The plan to fill the earth with people is in the bible and taken very seriously by the Catholic Church.

Personally, I think it's the mechanism of evolution. Species, and the strongest within a species, will drive out all others if not checked in some way. So I say it's time to stop evolution.
