I understand why it is necessary, but how did it start that way? Was it luck or what?
I actually never thought of the fingers thing. But how about the logarithmic scale that is based on tens. In geotechnical engineering the Casagrande Curve for deflection of soils is based on a logarithmic scale. Would this be possible in another number form? That isn't a rhetorical question.
