Maybe it's too simple, but I always understood the use of ten as our number base came from counting on our fingers (surprise, we have ten!). If it were up to us mathematicians, we might prefer twelve (lots of divisors). Computer scientists incline toward sixteen (hex notation is great for computers). Take your choice.

Electrons don't get sucked into nuclei, because of the laws of quantum mechanics - for better or worse, that's the way it is.
