Okay, sorry if this is somewhat unrelated to God & Science - but I think that discussing this can help us in our arguments in this forum.

I read in an astronomy textbook that no theory can be proven - it can only be disproven.

the·o·ry (th-r, thîr)
n., pl. the·o·ries.

Systematically organized knowledge applicable in a relatively wide variety of circumstances, especially a system of assumptions, accepted principles, and rules of procedure devised to analyze, predict, or otherwise explain the nature or behavior of a specified set of phenomena.

Based on the definition of a theory, the previous statement is correct, right?

What if I theorize that the door to my dorm room exists? I base my theory on my observations and what I know of our universe (the system). Does this mean that I cannot prove that the door exists?

People tell me all the time that we can't prove that the Earth is round. It was geometrically proven many times in the past. In the book "Steven Hawking's Universe" it is shown how it was proven (section entitled "Sticks and Stones" page 18-23).

Any thoughts on proof and existence and on proof of existence?
