The Bible, in it`s present form, did not exist during the time of Christ. Christ was a Jew, which meant during that time and now [at least amongst the practicing orthodox Jews], that they/He studied the "holy scriptures". There was every reason to believe that Jesus was quite familiar with the words and content of the Torah in addition to the latter books of the OT. For ex., Jesus said in Matthew 24 "as in the days of Noah". Clearly, he was familiar with the book of Genesis, what it was like during the "days of Noah", and why it was important for his disciples to understand what it was like during those days. Also, Jesus said in the same chapter of Matthew, "When ye therfore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place.." Again, he evidently studied the book of Daniel, which as an aside, is probably my favorite OT book. You suggested "a firmer foundation", in your post. That is a good choice of words. There is no firmer foundation than the death and resurrection of Christ for the believer. This is an important point. You can quote every scripture in the Bible, chapter and verse, and still miss the message.
