The discourse by Jesus at the sermon on the mount represented a fulfilment or perfection of the righteousness first outlined by the Mosaic law. That is, righteousness is not attained through mere ceremonialism [per the Pharisees] but rather, through Christ Himself. Part of the reason the Jews rejected Christ was because they missed the deeper meaning of righteousness as being a characteristic [or motive] of the heart. God forbid that a believer would reject the Ten Commandments, we are to take it to heart.
