I agree with Bladeslinger that the distances are just too vast...one small correction for bladeslinger, I believe he meant to say; our "galaxzy" is approximately 100,000 light years in diameter. Then the other numbers fall into place.

And what if the drake equation works out to be even less favorable for life, so that there is an average of only one techie civilization per galaxzy....

forget it.
