The conciousness of Christ, if you will, is/was the Word, in the first line of John`s Gospel. I would be the last person to limit God to simply a conciousness. You are right, it makes no sense to say that "an instant before Creation was conciousness". It is a challange to intelligently discuss something, that from our perspective, is a paradox. The best analogy I can think of is that space/time is like an aquarium in your living room. You [theoretically] could veiw it from any perspective you like. From the one-side would be the "Beginning", from the other would be the "End" of space/time. If you stuck your hand in from the top, it would correspond to a non-linear intervention, into the "space/time" of the aquariums` inhabitants. Undoubtably, they would percieve this [and rightfully so] as a super-natural event, as it would defy explanation, from their perspective at least. Christ died for all, but you must believe that He alone, is God.
