Awareness of the possibilities of humankind, that there is most likely life elsewhere, the magnitude of the universe and still no end in sight, these and many other things are changing us, evolving is constant, nothing is the only thing(non) which stays the same. The unified field theory may just give us less reason to look for the existance of a god, superstrings may be a key to understanding pre big bang existance of the universe as a whole. To assume that that a new covenant will involve god at all is mearly a hope that science will not reduce the concept of god in the future to an historical account of our psychological beginnings in the areas of culture and belief systems. The is no assurance that god and science will merge, many doubt that it will.
Of course, the belief in god is still strong in many areas of the world, so it is a real possibility, but the direction is away, not toward a stronger personal or vauge relationship with such beliefs, it is gathering momentum.
