Centuries from now if not much sooner, history will record these times as the fight between fundamentalist Christianity and fundamentalist Islam with the USA leading the Christian fight against a spectrum of Islamic fundamentalists from the terrorists to Islamic nations run by fundamentalist religious leaders. Of course, to be fair, the USA is also presently being run by fundamentalist leaders.

Therein I see the hand of God. First in the cold war we are asked to fight godless communism. Part of the fight, after all much of it was pyschological, was to portray the USA as a nation of God. "Nation under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance is the outstanding example. During the cold war all major religions seemed to back our efforts the fight godlessness.

But in the vacuum created by the capitulation of comunism without a world war, one would think that intelligent thinking would prevail, like the kind of thinking that created the Marshall Plan. But instead we are witnessing the clash of two religions, both professing to be the only correct one. Well at least the fundamentalist parts of either religion do.

But really that is just a battle of fundamentalisms within the larger war between the rational and the irrational. In my opinion the battle is irrational on both sides, but nevertheless we still cannot afford to lose that battle. I predict that the battle will be won only when the rational people of Iraq defeat the irrational ones.
