You know, the guy from MIT who has or had a column in the Sci Am. He calculated that if every technical civilization that comes along on another planet were to last less than 10,000 years, then we are unlikely to ever communicate with one. Presented it at a seminar at MIT one day. Then we all discussed what could limit tech civs to less than 10,000 years. The consensus is that given enough time every civ that discovers the H bomb will eventually destroy itself. I thought personally that perhaps there is a better way to communicate than with photons, and it gets adopted after awhile and TV done away with.
