My understanding of Christianity is just the opposite: the gate to heaven is wide and many shall enter. Is this the source of the idea among certain Christian sects that most everybody is damned?

Just a few lines above (7:8) Jesus says: "Ask and you will receive". So all we have to do is ask. And from what I just read in the Tibetian Book of the Dead, the most opportune time to ask for salvation is right after you die.
