Unless I'm mistaken (and correct me if I'm wrong, Hilbert) he was largely joking, saying that if we, as reflections of God, don't believe in him, that doesn't say very much about the accuracy or quality of the reflection. Basically, that the bible's God is an underachiever. It wasn't a terribly serious point.
