You may be right that a person who complains about "hearing allegedly un-controllable voices" can say do what-they-call say "manage easier" by not paying much attention to them; but maybe not so.

I know how anyone can generate a sensation of "external voices" as it is a layer below verbalised thought. If someone claims "they can not control voices" it does not follow necessarily that they can not control them: the "voices" may be DUE to their excessively controlling already even. They may need to learn to UN-control them.

I do not know anyone who has tried self-investigation re: this phenomenon so the proof of that pudding would be in the eating.
