The problem with enabling a mentally ill person by continuing to have extensive dialogues with them, is that they do not see there is a problem. Alan even denies there is such a thing as mental illness!

People generally want to believe the best, hope the best, assume the best, but in the case of someone having mental illness the best thing is to push that person to get treatment.

I really feel for Alan, I really do. He's a great guy and I think he's probably functioning in society to some limited degree, but anyone with mental illness must be making life tough for them - tougher than it has to be if they take medication.

Of course, Alan is not the only person on this forum with mental illness. One person is obviously schizophrenic or was raised at an early age with someone having those symptoms (you cannot always know). By all means, you shouldn't even mention a schizophrenic by name since this will only set them off. That is why I pick on Alan since he has a much more manageable mental illness.
