I was actually quite impressed with his writings. I was also impressed with the story that he foretold the exact time of this death. Apparently there were eyewitnesses at the time.

But I think Swedenborg describes God and the afterlife the only way it can be described to people who have not experienced them: through metaphors. It's like explaining to a little child what sex is. You can tell them it's like candy, or like going to the beach, or whatever, but the point is that until the child becomes a teenager he or she can't possibly understand what sex is. All a child can possibly understand about sex is that it's something they cannot understand. I think we, in this life, are in a very similar position regarding God and the afterlife.
