Bruce should be consulted as he is far more expert on these matters than I.

But as I understand General Relativity, the mass distorts the space and the photon just follows the geodesics. So the photon is passive in this context. The interplay is between space and mass.

However, what you say about mass attracting photons and photons attracting mass is logical. I just do not know what the answer is.
