My view is that life can be described in chemical/biological terms, and it can be described in spiritual terms. What they reference are entirely different things.

The chemical/biological systems that we all share are completely materialistic in that given enough time and effort, we will eventually understand how thought occurs, how the brain works, where memories are stored, etc. Our lives will be reduced to chemical/biological systems. Eventually physicists will reduce even all of this to very simple physical principles that will 'explain' just about everything we can observe in the cosmos.

On a spiritual level, the materialistic account will never be satisfactory to human beings. We are more than chemical/biological systems, and the universe is more than a collection of simple principles that elicit a universe full of galaxies and stars and planets that eventually evolve life.
