Humans are generally not disciplined to properly handle and review technology. We don't have the checks and balances in place to keep a close watch on what develops, and tend to react only after the situation is almost out of control. We depend on luck way too much. The modification of our own DNA is just one of many different technologies which might doom us if we aren't spiritually fortunate. Other than spiritual fortune, we have very little chance as a human race. Remember, we've only been here as a species for perhaps less than a 100,000 years. That's a microsecond from an biological evolutionary standpoint. It's not too difficult to imagine a species that is smart enough to toy with DNA in plants, animals, and themselves, and accidentally destroy themselves. We better start space travel soon, that might give us a fighting chance to survive, if not, then only by God's grace do we forge on in our stupidy. |
