It looks like 'quiet' was a name not hidden. Maybe you can be 'quiet' for a while?

Defense of clergy? Defense of "weak and degenerate race of beings?

It's hard to tell based on the context (I'm too tired to pull my copy of the DFRE off the shelf. In any case, I'd say that Gibbon's philosophy of history has changed since his time. Historians have the awkward task of providing a more impartial description of history. This means including multiple perspectives, and in which case maybe another perspective should provide another view to the role of the clergy.
