The babies were shown sequences of pictures with the same number of different objects, and they lost interest until the number of objects were changed. More than three objects were not ever of interest as I remember the report of the experiments in a recent book on cognition. Using different objects, like two cars followed by two houses followed by two apples, did not alert the babies. Only when the number changed did the babies become alert.
