WHAT exists? WHY?
Definition of things may be debated as you say, always.

For an hypothesis to be tested, we define terms
just so when the experiment fails, which most do
in some degree, we at least know precisely what
we tried...it's a kind of legalese for communications' sake. If the same term is tossed with several meanings and things get heated, as they have in centuries past,
it seems part of the problem was the folks involved were not really communicating at all,
since their terms were not mutually defined.
They were just spinning their wheels, hearing themselves talk, trading incoherencies...however you say it.
