Are Scientists Surprised About M&M Star's Physical Equations?

Robert, are those "surprised" scientists saying that their current equations in mathematical physics do not predict such a star is consistent with predicted range of possibilities? Or are they saying it is a very rare phenomenon but within possibilities predicted by their equations?
