: : From the most primative single celled organisms to insects to mammals there is a prime directive. Survival. Life is based on survival. Once survival is made easy, as is the case with man, we have time on our hands. Purpose? Its a funny term. Looking this term up in the American Heritage Dictionary does little to resolve how funny it is. "Object towards which one strives or for which someting exists, goal, aim." the first of several definitions. : I think it all depends on your reference point. From within your compnay for example you have a purpose. To get promoted, move up the corporate lader. From within your family you have a purpose, provide for your children and see them grow and be successful. From within the country we have a purpose, be law biding contributing citizens. From a vantage point outside of the Earth, no, no purpose at all. Your life will effect nothing outside of the Earth and honestly probably very little within the Earth. From a universal standpoint, our lives are meaningless. Its not something pleasant, not something people want to hear. : Contemplating the raw size of the universe is almost impossible to do. Then to emagine its just one of billions within a "mega-universe" is just impossible. But our lives have no more purpose than a rock or a small commet, or an atom for that matter. Is there a reason for anything. I see no reason to believe there is.

I do think that as far as life is concerned, nature provides us with a means to continue itself, this does not have meaning in itself but I think it has to do with awareness, once it is a percieving organism, even in the case of single cells, it does not want to lose that perception by dying, and thus reproduction occurs. Of couse that is only a lame idea. I enjoyed you're interpretation of "Purpose of Life". Thanks!
