but all we have to worry about is taking advantage of the next step. As long as the next step is reached, it doesn't matter.
The current fastest computer in the world (the last time I checked) was a super computer made of 1024 400 Mhz processors, and that computer is (I believe)only a year or so old. The current fastest processor for personal use is over 3 Ghz. At the time of that super computer was put completed, personal processors were around 1Ghz, that was the end of last summer. With the rate things are going, I will have to wait until the last minute to get a computer if I don't want it to be obsolete by my sophmore year in college.
At a semenar I went to, a professor gave a presentation about processor speed, and stated that processors will increase at that rate for at least another 20 years with this type of technology. There is a newer technology using light instead of wires (called "light computers"), which greatly increases every aspect of a computer's speed (although they probably won't be out for years).
I watched a special on the Discovery Channel about our supercomputers, and that 1024 processor somputer had about as much processing power as a grub worm. Our brains are made out of hundreds of millions of neurons, and that supercomputer has less processing power than ONE adult human neuron. Those AI engineers have quite a task ahead of them!
I watched a special on TLC (in '99 or '00) about AI that said that within the next 25 years, computer's will have surpassed Humans in both intelligence and processing power. To think, I may see the day when a computer is smarter than I am?!
I have always wondered if we could harness that power, or will they become uncontrolable. |
