But what if a person's entire life has been shaped by his inability to understand the meaning behind symbols? I suppose that person would eventually give up trying to make sense of language and instead just concentrate on the logical relationships between the symbols themselves.

It's a sad life, but sometimes neurology doesn't give you a choice.
