This dictionary defines semantics as
"the historical and psychological study and the classification of changes in the meaning of words or forms viewed as factors in linguistic development"

In science, the "truth" may refer to something
different than the historical or psychological study. We cannot only look backward to find
scientific understanding -- hence your shock at conversing with me.
